Table of Planetary Hours

by Lady Bridget, © 1998

The ancients believed that each hour of the day is ruled by a planet, and therefore corresponds to the nature of that planet. When starting a new project, or magickal working, the planet whose energies would be the best for the working should be the ruling planet in the hour the working is begun.

To determine what time the planetary hours begin, it is necessary to know what time sunrise and sunset happen on that particular day. Then divide the hours in between by 12, and you have the times for the daylight hours. You can do the same for the nighttime hours, to find all the corresponding planetary hours. Only once in a while will these hours equal 60 minutes, because during the summer the days are longer, and during the winter the days are shorter. Use the following table then, to determine the planet that rules each hour of the days of the week.

Now, keeping in mind that this is really for the more advanced magickal student, or those who are working the Higher Ceremonial Magick to really worry about. In my opinion, if you are only doing something small for yourself, you don't necessarily have to plan this much in detail unless you feel it is important to you. Remember, magick works in the mind! If this is too much for you, forget about it. If this type of challenge makes your magick more effective and complete, then by all means use this information. The choice, as always, is yours. I present this information always in that light, and not as something you MUST do, but only as what you CAN do. An intelligent choice must be an educated choice.
For the information of what each planet rules, see Days of the Week and know that the attributes associated with that day are those of the planet that rules that day.
